Woolston Eyes

Post by ianball »

This morning, Simon had a guided tour around this great reserve as part of a BTO young birders event organised by Elliot Monteith.
Simon's highlights were families of Black Necked Grebe, Garganey, Green Sandpiper and Black Tailed Godwit on No.3 bed. Flora highlight were some Broad Leaved Helloborine. Simon and the other young birders were guided round by Brian Ankers, the chairman of the reserve, who also told Simon the history of the reserve. Simon also enjoyed eating Himalayan Balsam which apparently is fully edible.
I walked around the periphery of the reserve and spent most of my time around No. 4 bed. I saw Black Necked Grebe, dozens of Whitethroat, Reed Warbler and Bunting, Raven, Peregrine, Swift, Sand Martin, and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Gatekeeper butterflies were everywhere - several hundred seen. Small Copper, Meadow Brown, Small Tortoiseshell, Large and Small Whites.
