Velvet Scoter, High Rid Reservoir, Bolton

Post by Leonard Poxon »

Went to see the Scoter this morning. I was quite a way out from the bank and diving a lot, coming up most times a long way from spot it dove down. I never managed to see if it ate anything as it never seemed to come up with any swan Mussels. It looks healthy enough though.

Velvet Scoter still present this afternoon, showing well close to the shore when I arrived, although it did drift out into the middle of the reservoir later. The water was surprisingly calm after this morning's winds.

Thanks Neville & Peter, it was a lifer for me.

I saw a female Smew a few years ago at Worthington Reservoir though at the time it was disputed if it was an escapee from a wildfowl collection. I then saw a male at Lunt Meadows in April 2016, which a great bird. Smew if my favourite Duck.
