Hesketh Out Marsh - Newton Marsh - Marton Mere (Sun 23)

Post by Neville Root »

8.00-11.00am Hesketh Out Marsh: few hours spent in the sunshine, surprisingly no other birders about on the bank. Good numbers of wigeon, teal, pink foots, lapwing, redshank, greenshank and little egret on the marsh. Also 4 whoopers flew in and soon took off again, mute swan(5), marsh harrier (f) towards the Ribble, sparrowhawk (f) mobbed by raven and maybe the same one sending the waders up later on, GBB gull looking on ominously, avocet(10), Black-tailed godwit(2), golden plover(6), GWE(3), curlew (20), c snipe(15), dunlin(12), joined at one point by a single little stint that had been feeding alone earlier.
12.00 Newton Marsh: After dipping on the grey phalarope at Leighton Moss yesterday (as did Len, who I met in the Allen Hide), went to see the one nr Freckleton and its impressive rotating feeding technique.
1.00 Marton Mere: I was persuaded to go and see the white-winged tern (only 9 mls from the phalarope) which was hunting insects over the mere. Several noisy cetti's as well. Now...must get back to some Chorley birding.

I thought you might head there Len. Lifer for me too, I was surprised at how diminutive it was, almost dunlin-size.

Three wonderful captures Len. Called in this morning while passing the area. Looked nice with the sun on it.
