Cairngorm Winter Wonderland

Post by ianball »

Have been very fortunate to spend Hogmanay with friends in Inverness. Managed a little bit of birding around Cairngorm and Glenmore whilst there. My highlight was getting to grips with Crossbill calls again. Having lived in this part of the world in years gone by, it was fun to listen to the different Crossbill sounds coming out of the trees again. By the end of two days of walking one flock were confidently sound compared to Scottish, with all the rest too similar to Common. Numerous tit flocks were examined until one finally revealed a lovely Crested Tit amongst its commoner cousins. Higher up Red Grouse were everywhere in large groups, until a solitary flying bird nearer the treeline revealed white underwings - female Black Grouse. Very nice. Distant Golden Eagle over the Findhorn, Slavonian Grebe on Loch Ness were added bonuses. Drove past plenty of Red Kite and Hooded Crows on Black Isle on a failed look for dolphins :-( Happy New Year everyone :-)
