My wife and I enjoyed a short break in mid Wales visiting our usual haunts. We were based on the outskirts of Aberystwyth but we did most of our birdwatching approximately twenty miles inland on Cors Caron near Tregaron. We also made a lengthy trip to RSPB Dinas in the Cambrian mountains a super little reserve which hosts Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts and Wood Warblers. En route we checked out a small area where we had come accross Golden Ringed dragonflies last year but maybe we were two or three weeks too early as they were nowhere to be seen. Photography-wise my target bird was the Pied Flycatcher, my favourite small migrant. I finally hit the jackpot at 6:45pm on Thursday evening at a nest site near Tregaron. Incredibly, I managed to get quite close to this male who was in overdrive collecting insects for his family.
