Re: Croston / mawdesley moss .

Quiet on the geese front on the Croston Finney side as the Pink-foots (2000-2500 of them) have relocated to the field immediately on the other (Rufford) side of the Douglas (but still in the Chorley recording area). 9 Greylag Geese and 350 large gulls (90% Herring) also present (small gulls - all Bl...

Re: Croston / mawdesley moss .

2.00-5.00 pm: Incredible build-up of Pink-footed Geese this afternoon, up to 4500 largely centred on Great Close field (Croston Finney). Grey Heron flying over the field sent 1000's skyward towards Croston and Mawdesley Moss, but they returned, very noisily, shortly after. Considering the numbers, a...

Lower Rivington Gull Roost

6.00-7.00 pm - first sizable roost of the autumn, between 1500-2000 gulls. Unfortunately the birds were out in the middle\northern end of the reservoir (where they usually seem to roost over the warmer months) and, combined with the choppy conditions, made it tricky to pick out any oddities. Of the ...

Re: Lanzarote 18 to 29th. August 2023

Yes Len, LBM is my benchmark for the Parakeets, used to hear them regularly over my house on their way to LBM. My largest counts for Parakeets over the last 4 years at LBM: 2020 = 13 2021 = 10 2022 = 3 2023 = 0 (lack of Chorley sightings by others leads me to believe they may have moved on or have b...

Some good shots there Len (nice to be reminded what a RN Parakeet looks like now that they seem to have disappeared from Chorley!)

Re: Hic Bibi ponds

Cheers Len, I find separating Common, Migrant and Southern Hawkers in the field tricky at times, especially when you know they are all present.

Re: Hic Bibi ponds

Looking at the Migrant Hawker again, I think it is in fact a Common Hawker - as it has a yellow costa (leading edge of the wing) - I am sure someone will correct me if not. So 4 Hawkers seen in total.

Hic Bibi ponds

As others have posted recently the Hic Bibi ponds have been productive for Odonata in the recent hot weather. 3 consecutive lunch time visits (12.30-1.30 pm) have seen Southern Hawker (5 or 6 spread out across the ponds, mostly males constantly on the wing); Brown Hawker 2 (male seen off a few times...

St Aidan's, Fairburn Ings and Blacktoft Sands

Spent a day visiting RSPB reserves at St Aidan's, Fairburn Ings and Blacktoft Sands on the way to a very important football match in Hull. First visit to St Aidan's and it's an impressive and very large site (it was where was a Long-toed Stint turned up a couple of years ago). Spent 4 hours there an...
