Re dead raptor. I'll stick my head above the parapet and suggest from the tail barring and underwing barring, that it was a juvenile Sparrowhawk, presumably male from its small size. Any other opinions?

A gratifying turn-out of 12 or so members arrived at Rufford station for the field trip. The walk got off to a flier with flocks of Pink-footed Geese and Whooper Swan flying over, and a sighting of a Barn Owl roosting in a hedgerow. Large flocks of corvids and woodpigeon were constantly moving aroun...

Lower Healey 7.1.12

Not much on the water - just 3 Coot. The resident Mallard, Moorhen and Hybrid Goose had moved to an adjacent flooded field. A flock of 15 Goldfinch was feeding on an alder by the mill race. A Buzzard was hovering over Nab Wood. Other than that it was pretty quiet. Full sightings:- Mallard 12, Coot 3...

Bank Hall area 2.1.12

2 or 3 Buzzards, Kestrel, Nuthatch, Jay, Goldfinch, Blue, Great and LT Tit, Robin, Wren, Blackbird.
Large numbers of Jackdaw on the scaffolding at Bank Hall made it look decidedly Hitchcockian. Also lots of Woodpigeon, Herring and LBB Gulls circling around.
Year list 40 species - must do better!

Anglezarke Res 2.1.12

A female Pochard was the only bird of interest on the water. Plenty of Mallard and BH Gulls, plus a couple of Canada Geese also present.
A male Sparrowhawk flew over the motorway bridge at Botany on the way out. A Kestrel was hovering by the roadside near Limbrick on the way back.

Spent the last hour of daylight on Croston Finney in a desperate attempt to score an equaliser (Whooper Swan or Brambling would have done, believe it or not). All I got was a soaking for my troubles. There were several each of Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Linnet, Reed and Corn Bunting and Yello...

My list is 121 as well, Gary. Are you counting that dodgy Dotterel?

Looks like I might have to go for the Snow Bunting on Winter Hill for the decider!

Withnell Fold 27.12.11

Fairly quiet around the flashes with the main interest being c30 Teal on a regular pond, c20 Fieldfare feeding with around 200 Starling and a couple of Buzzards, both perched on farm gates, but at opposite ends of the flashes. Also in the area was a flock of around 50 Woodpigeon and a flock of at le...
