Pheasants
I was once told that genuine "wild" male pheasants have a well defined white neck ring, but released ones have no neck ring. Any truth in that?

Cormorants at Croston
There are usually a few (6 is common) Cormorants roosting on the power cable across the River Douglas near the Great Hanging Bridge on Croston Moss. Today at about 6.00pm I counted 12 which I think is the most I have ever seen.

Vestal at Belmont 15th September (Steve Martin)
It is a very distinctive moth - there is a nice photo on the above site on the "what's about" page. Another in a good summer for migrant moths.

16/9/06 At my moth light trap this evening I had a Scarce Bordered Straw. Normally it is an uncommon migrant, but apparently quite a few this year. I believe this is the first Chorley record. Hummingbird Hawk
14/9/06. Single Hummingbird Hawk Moth has been present almost daily at a garden near Rivington for the last two weeks. It is feeding exclusively on fuchsia.
