Red Admiral

1st Red Admiral I have seen this year was at Brennand's Garden Centre at Charnock Richard this afternoon. None seen yet in my garden - in fact disappointingly few butterflies in the garden so far this year :( but Buddleias are just coming into flower so I am hopeful of more soon.

Mallard surprise

Whilst talking to my next door neighbour earlier this evening I was disturbed by another neighbour's dog chasing something that flew over my head. The flying object turned out to be a female Mallard which soon returned to my garden and I saw it join up with a chick. I live on the estate by Parklands...

Happy New Year

Happy New Year. It has started that way for me as 5 waxwings seen in tall tree behind Council Offices/ H.H.St. Church around 1.30 pm. Those with Fieldfare and Mistle Thrush plus garden birds including Nuthatch and Bullfinch have got my 2017 list off to a good start, although I don't even try to comp...

Goldcrest in garden

Goldcrest in my garden today was a rare visitor. I hope it stays around as I don't usually record this species on the society's Winter Garden Bird survey that starts on Sunday, 4th December. Also rarely in my garden that overlooks Astley Park is G S Woodpecker, although I frequently see or hear the...

Re: Huyton Rd + L&L Canal

Pleased to see that now you are the society's fungi recorder you are reiterating what I have been saying for years! Well done with your attempts - keep up the good work.

Fungi in garden

I had a mini fungal foray in my garden this afternoon as a break from the seemingly endless annual task of sweeping up leaves! Under / near the large Silver Birch tree were 2 Brown Birch Boletes and 3 Coconut Milkcaps. Thankfully no Honey Fungus was seen in the garden although I didn't 'explore' all...

Re: Duxbury Woods

Sorry for the delay in responding but I've only just worked out how to access your Flickr gallery! Although it is difficult and often impossible to do ID from photos alone, most of your photos are of species that can be done with a reasonable amount of certainty. I agree with Len's ID of all but the...

Fungus by doctor's

1 large Bearded Milkcap (Lactarius torminosus) under Silver Birch by Library House Surgery, Chorley. Also several LBJs in the same grassland but not picked for ID as didn't want dirty hands when going to Doctor's this afternoon!

Last butterfly?

Just when I thought I had seen my last butterfly of the year, I saw 2 Red Admirals in my garden around noon. They were on one of the late-flowering yellow buddeias. It isn't often that I see a butterfly in my garden in November!

Re: Possible new fungi for Chorley area

Excellent find. I hadn't heard of it before so looked it up.Did you take a photo. Obviously if proven correct it will be a new record for the area.
