Re: Green Woodpecker

Spot on, I thought I heard a Green Woodpecker near the old caravan in the horse paddock along the Goit path yesterday, and it was indeed a Song Thrush, it was mimicking a part the Pecker's yaffle call.

Drew a blank on a Ring Ouzel on the Brinscall moors earlier, but this male was showing well at White Coppice at 8.45am

Re: Field Trip to Knott End, Sunday 19th March

Yellow-legged Gull (bird on the left, with a slightly darker mantled LBB Gull) in a flooded field just inland from the sea wall at Fluke Hall. It's relatively small-size indicates its probably a female.

Iceland Gull - Lower Rivington Reservoir

Juvenile Iceland Gull roosted at the reservoir for the second evening - just a couple of days later than the 2nd year Iceland Gull that appeared last year. This March has proven quite a fruitful month for rarer gulls on the site - Glaucous, Caspian and Iceland gulls have been sighted so far this mon...

Re: Webs count .

4.00-5.30 pm: 4,000-5,000 gulls in the roost this evening. At one point the entire roost took to the air for 10 minutes - for no immediately apparent reason - but an impressive sight nevertheless. Highest number I've had yet of Mediterranean Gulls, probably 30 to 40 present (including the 4 together...

Re: Lower Rivington Reservoir

Shots of 2 Med Gulls (one in partial and one in full summer head plumage) and 2 very contrasting sub-species of Herring Gull, one an argenteus (the more friendly-faced one on the left) and the other an argentatus (the snouty, more aggressive-looking on the right) on the roost this evening.

The legs couldn't be seen when it was at roost, but it did fly and I am pretty sure no jess could be seen (although it was dusk by that point)

Re: Eagle Owl

The status of Eagle Owls in the UK is open to debate Phil. There are thought to be up to 40 in the UK. These birds are thought to either have escaped from captivity or deliberately released from private collections. The Eccleston bird does seem very tame (perhaps too tame for its own good).
