Dorset Birding

Family holiday in Dorset allowed for a few very early morning (and one very late) birding trips. Arne RSPB (13/08/2023): A mile walk across the reserve to Shipstal Point where the long staying first-summer Forster's Tern (its the middle bird with the big black eye patch in the photo) was seen among ...

Yarrow Meadows

12.30-1.30 pm: plenty of butterflies about on the Meadows and up to Yarrow Farm. Common and Holly Blue close together, with the Common (and its tatty wing) among the self-heal on the meadows and the Holly near the treeline next to the River Chor; Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper; Large, Small and Green-v...

Re: Reservoirs

Lack of Scoters has been disappointing compared to previous years. Had a check later on (6.30pm) only a single Common Sandpiper to add (top end of Anglezarke).

Re: Croston/Mawdesly Moss yesterday 19.07.2023

Better photos than I managed Len. There were a couple of juvenile Corn Buntings, one was calling repeatedly from a treetop and the Cornell Merlin app picked it up as a Yellowhammer. Then it broke into brief song at which point the app correctly named the bird.

Yarrow Meadows

11:00-01:30 pm: good numbers of butterflies in the sunshine along the Meadows - Gatekeeper, Great and Small White, Green-veined White, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Ringlet, Small Skipper, Small Tortoiseshell and (I think, see photo) White-letter Hairstreak. Also Broad-bodied Chaser, Brown Hawker and E...

Re: Reservoirs

I think the paler mantled Great-backed Gull (GBB) - the middle of the 3 gulls - is the one seen regularly over winter on the Lower Rivington Reservoir gull roost. The darker GBB Gull on the right is in fact much larger (with a huge bill). Both GBB Gulls dwarf the Lesser Black-backed Gull (the left-h...

Hic Bibi

1.00-2.00 pm: Buzzard; Pied Wagtail; House Sparrow. Goldcrest; Common Whitethroat; Blackcap; Chiffchaff; Willow Warbler; and Reed Bunting all in song. Unfortunately had to tell an eejit to stop running his dog through the ponds - maybe some signage might discourage people. First Swift sighting of th...

Sollom

7.00-8.00 am: Arrived at Wymott as Gary was leaving - counted 32 Whimbrel, also Yellowhammer pair and a single Linnet in addition to Gary's sightings. 8.30-10.30 am: Sollom - field (between the Douglas and canal) was being ploughed for grain planting so many birds taking advantage of the freshly til...

Re: Croston/ mawdesley moss .

10.00-1.00 pm: similar sightings to Gary a bit later on, plus Yellow Wagtail momentarily with the Wheatear (numbers increased to 12+) and White Wagtail on the tilled field, Green Sandpiper on the Loch Meadow flood, another Common Sandpiper briefly alighted on some floating vegetation detritus on the...

Re: Arctic Tern

Not sure if the Tern was the same one as seen yesterday (distant screen grab shown here of yesterday evening's bird - it's the white blob in the top middle!), which I wasn't sure whether it was an Arctic or Common Tern. Even though both birds were fly-throughs, today's bird gave more prolonged views...
