Hoghton Peregrines

Two Peregrines screeching over the top of my house as I type. The same yesterday morning - looks like an adult giving a youngster some flying lessons - spectacular!!

Re: Talbot Mill

Neil,

The page says ‘restricted access’ even when I am logged in. Is that deliberate?

Re: Belmont Reservoir & Hoghton

There was a Barn Owl in that area of Hoghton at 7am today. I have seen it for the last 3 mornings but there is no sight nor sound of any chicks at the nest box. Do you think it is too late for chicks and young owls would have fledged by now?

Impact of the drought.

Two streams near us have run dry. They were well stocked with sticklebacks but these will now be casualties with a knock on impact. It is also reported that the High Cop pond near Top o’th’ Lane at Brindle has dried out for the first time in living memory (80+ years). Maybe C&DNHS can get some p...

Re: Lead Mines Valley - Anglezarke

Hopefully the fires will be under control soon although it is looking worse due to the winds today. Even if the grouse chicks survive the fire they will starve as there will be a lack of heather to feed on.

Spoke with gamekeeper and he had spotted it a couple of days earlier.

Re: Talbot Mill Chorley

Totally agree Paul. We need to campaign not just post sightings. I apologise if this sounds condescending, it is not meant to but we need to have a more public voice.

Re: Evening Walk to Lower Burgh Meadow - Thursday 21st june

I am hoping to attend this, it would be lovely to meet Forum posters!!

My Dad organised the 1st ever clean ups of Birkacre in the 1970’s when he was Headmaster at Southlands. My Mum may still have some cuttings from the Chorley Guardian.

Hoghton

Family of Nuthatch on my bird feeder this morning plus Greater Spotted Woodpecker (regular visitor). I was watching a young Lapwing being given flying lessons this morning by Bolton Hall Farm, I suspect it was the only one to survive grasss cutting and muck spreading. Roe deer seen almost every morn...

Hoghton Frogs

The work started on the Weir yesterday.

Unfortunately the earthworks machine has splattered all the tadpoles just (I reckon 2 to 3 days) before they left the water as frogs.

Hoghton Kingfisher Nest

I have finally found the Kingfisher nest in the Hoghton Bottoms area. It is well hidden due to overhanging foliage - in fact so well hidden that it took me a couple of minutes before I spotted the hide behind it being used by a local photographer who works for the RSPB!!

Hoghton Sandmartins and Canada Geese

About 25/30 sanartins nests that appear to be well populated on the high sandbank 3/4m upstream from the Weir.

Also air of Canada Geese and 3 large chicks by the Weir this morning.
