Willow Tit - new to garden
Despite a slow start to this winter's garden birds a nice new addition to the garden list - one or possibly two - Willow Tits - making 5 species of tits on the bird table at once - nice to see!

Redshank and Buzzard
10-00pm tonight, hearing a tremendous commotion went outside to find 2 Redshank vigorously attacking a Buzzard at very low level over the house, the Buzzard was flying erratically to avoid the 2 pronged attack- they eventually headed off in a westerly direction, Redshank still attacking the Buzzard ...

Grey Lag Geese
Walk around the area, approx. 60 Canada Geese on Anglezarke and then came across 16 Grey Lags feeding in fields behind Parson's Bullough. Also seen on walk 1 Oystercatcher, probably 30/40 Mallard, mainly males (females still on nests?) and finally a female Cuckoo over Spen Cob.

Morrison's Peregrines
Whilst queuing for KFC (living the life!) watched the male fly off the chimney a couple of times, circle around, then return to top platform, next to nest, no sign of female.

Re: Old Rachel's, Hempshaws, Sam Pasture, Standing Stones Hi
Might suggest Mark that you were fortunate and that your brown bird with white chest was a Ring Ouzel - good record!

Re: Brook Lamprey spotted Rivington
Brilliant - I love lamprey of all species, in the 70s we used to see Brook Lamprey regularly in the Goit - in their thousands - usually in the spring - they live their lives as ammocoetes for up to 7 years (larval stage) quickly mature into sexual adults and after spawning die! They spend all their ...

Chiffchaff
A bird spent almost all afternoon in our Magnolia tree, feeding earnestly, just a foot or two away from front window - from its activity suspect it was a very hungry new arrival rather than an overwinterer.

Rookeries
Not sure if there is a new Rookery in Wheelton or is it referred to as 'Lower Wheelton' in Annual Report. Anyway, behind the old Police Station on Blackburn Road (going down the hill) there is a small rookery of 8 nests - don't recall seeing them there previously - but might be me!! Also St Chad's h...

'Confused' as a newt!
Sadly had to fill in garden pond last year (grandchildren!) and spent many hours carefully removing amphibians. Today, found a very confused looking Smooth Newt plodding around the site of the old pond! Poor thing!

Farmer been muckspreading - at least 3000 BH Gulls (probably more) on the fields by river and despite a long and careful look - not one Med Gull - clearly Med Gulls prefer a better class of food! Also on river, Cormorant, Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher and daft Pheasants everywhere!

Re: Red-flanked Bluetail
Given Neil's comment re LS Woodpeckers being considered extinct in Lancashire wouldn't it be a good idea to try and focus members' birding on trying to establish the status of this bird in our area - just about the best time of year - check out their call/drumming - lets see what is out there members!
