Re: Bretherton eyes floods .

8.00am - mercifully no shooters this morning. Similar to Paul's sightings last evening. Wigeon numbers increased to 30, no waders, equal numbers of pink foot and Canada (c.500 each), barnacle still there and a barn owl was seen hunting on the banks of the Douglas before I got there. Wigeon takes Cho...

Re: Bretherton eyes floods .

They looked like pink foots to me Neil, although I had no desire to get too close. Interestingly the plastic decoys they had were definitely Canada, so I might be wrong. I headed over to Marshside as an alternative and saw the American golden plover, little stints and curlew sandpipers (but dipped o...

Re: Bretherton eyes floods .

For those thinking of heading out to Eyes Lane this morning I wouldn't bother. Dozens of geese carcasses being loaded onto an offroader. Must have been one of the easier 'turkey shoots'. Safe to say not a lot else around (the geese are widely staying to the skies).

Re: Bretherton eyes floods .

12.30-1.15 similar numbers (500 to 600) of pink foots at lunchtime today. Not a lot of room for anything else, but still good numbers of BH gull, lapwing, swans (7 whooper, 3 mute) and starling - no waders or other waterfowl to be seen on the flood. Nearby several skylark, flock of linnet (40), 2 bu...

Marshside & Hesketh Bank

8.15 - 1.00pm Autumn migration in full flow - 10's of 1000's of pink feet coming in huge flocks, 1000's of lapwing, golden plover (hopefully some can make it over to Chorley), godwits, starling & wigeon. Also cattle egret (4), curlew sandpiper (2 on Outer Crossens marsh), ruff (100's), redshank,...

Re: Withnell fold flashes .

12.30-1.15pm - similar to previous days. 50+ snipe many frequently in the air, single ruff on the flash, no sign of green sandpiper. Calling buzzard and sparrowhawk (heard). Good numbers of corvids, woodpigeon, swallow, lapwing, starling on the fields (and yet more snipe) and similarly mallard and t...

Re: Withnell fold flashes Ruff !

12.30-1.15 - must have just missed you Len. There were 7 ruff on the far pool (before flying off towards Bridge 91). Also, flock of swallows and house martins feeding over the flashes (flushing a snipe), good numbers of lapwing, starling and corvids (100's) on the fields beyond. Plenty of teal and 3...

Re: Withnell fold flashes Ruff !

5.45-7.15pm - the 5 ruff were just in front of last pool of the flashes (or just beyond Bridge 89, not 91). A low flying buzzard sent 10 snipe into the air off the fields, many more snipe in the air (didn't see one on the ground) between the showers coming out of the flashes presumably to roost else...
