Chris, the 2nd photo is a little ringed plover. No orange bill or legs but most noticable is the yellow eye ring.

little ringed plovers

At least 5 LRP at 7pm last night. They were very vocal and very active. 2 pairs chasing each other and a single bird contiually circling the area. One also chased a crow off as it flew over. I'm fairly sure there were more but I could only definitely identify 5 seperate birds. No sign of the ringed ...

little ringed plover

Pair of little ringed plovers on the stony land (described as 'area of future development' on the information boards) at Mossfield. They tried to breed here last summer but were continually disturbed by trucks and kids on motorbikes. Although there haven't been many trucks over the winter, there are...

Mossfield

Heard my 1st local chiffchaff of the year on Saturday. Good numbers of skylark, many in the air but also reasonably good views of birds on the ground. A group of c30 meadow pipits which I presume are passing through. 4 roe deer between Mossfield and Preston Road.

Wigan Flashes

4 black necked grebes on Scotsman's Flash yesterday. Also 100s of sand martins over the water and a kingfisher diving into Westwood Flash. I was in Wigan visiting my mum on Mothers Day so I also nipped to Orrell Water Park where I saw 6 brambling, water rail and a pair of bullfinch at the feeding st...

Sorry for the delay with this posting, busy few days. Went to look for the twite on Friday 13/2 but had no joy. Several groups of very flighty linnets but I couldn't get close enough to seach fo twite amongst them. Flushed 5 snipe but no jack snipe. Quite a few pipits and 1 skylark. 9 redwings (3 on...

There are 2 areas where I look. Firstly, follow the road from the A6 past Wolseley and then past the stony ground on your right which has been prepared for future development. There is a boggy, grassy area between here and the new houses, this is where last year's long staying jack snipe was located...

Buckshaw Jack Snipe

Walked my dogs over the areas of waste ground on the industrial estate and flushed 14 snipe, at least 2 of which were jack snipe. Last year I saw a regular jack snipe in this vicinity until the first week of May but unfortunately the new houses are now encroaching the area where I would see it. I mu...

Chris, there used to be a huge corvid roost at the Buckshaw end of the reserve but sadly most of the trees were felled so it's now a much reduced roost. The magpie roost (close to the reserve entrance) is often in excess of 100 birds.

The entrance is next to the Wolsely unit directly opposite Multipart (the Wolsely nearest to the A6). Saw the barn owl again last night at 8.15 pm, the first time since the original sighting. I'm not too surprised because it has been raining every night up to last night.

Well done Dave, I only saw 3 when I was there on Friday. No joy with the twite? There's a group of 40+ on the beach at the end of Weld Road in Southport.
