Green Woodpecker !

1 Green Woodpecker heard and seen well in flight at north end of Anglezarke Reservoir at about 325pm. Flew over what looked like Gary’s van on the causeway ! 11 Cormorant on the rocks in middle of reservoir. 3 GBB Gull on upper Rivington earlier. Professor Yaffle takes me to 135 species for the year.

Cuckoo still present this morning near railway together with single Greenshank and 2 Golden Plover in field east of Alma Wood. Evening visit bumping into Len and seeing the lesser spotted Neville skulking in the distant undergrowth. Pretty sure I saw 3 Greenshank in flight over the Alma Wood pool. I had earlier seen 2 on Great Close floods and Len had seen 1 nearer Alma Wood. Hopefully Neville can confirm that there were 3....

Couple of hours on the mosses tonight. Plenty of Hobby food in the form of 3 main groups of hirundines totalling c100 birds (c50 far end of Great Close, c20 in field near Great Hanging Bridge and c30 near Carr Lane). Approx split of 50 House Martin, 40 Swallow and 10 Swift. No Hobby but 3-4 Kestrel ...

1 Swift over Eyes Lane this evening.

Also c20 Swallow, 5 House Martin, 1 Kestrel, 2 Mute Swan on river, plenty of Woodpigeon and 6 Stock Dove.

Glad that you got the Cuckoo and good to see you this morning for the mini waderfest !

Additional birds for me included c75 Lapwing, 1 Teal and 1 female Wheatear.

Greenshank takes me to 134 species for the year.

Great spot - looks like I took a wrong turning this evening when I headed over the railway instead.

I did look distantly down towards those pools but nothing obvious was showing !

Spent almost 2 hours on Mawdesley Moss this evening in the hope of the Gary’s Quail from Wednesday. An evening walk up to Great Hill from the Brinscall end A couple of Curlew appeared to be staking territory. 4 Red Grouse, c30 Meadow Pipit, 4 Skylark and 1 Golden Plover heard.
