little ringed plover

2 LRP in the usual place, on the stony ground next to Wolseley, on Fri 8th. They were joined by 3 oystercatchers on Sat.

20-30 siskins in the alders at the bottom of Foxglove Drive, Whittle on Friday 29/1. Also 3 Roe Deer in the adjoining fields.

Wed 13th Jan
Bitterly cold and visibility was awful due to the drifting snow. However, did manage to see a male hen harrier hunting over the marsh and a female merlin sat on a fence post. Usual waders and wildfowl. Large groups of starling, linnet and skylark.

Mixed group of fieldfare and mistle thrush on the waste ground near the industrial estate. Also mixed flocks of reed bunting, goldfinch and mipit.

I walked the dogs around Mossfield for a few hours.
1 jay plus all the usual corvids
1 mistle thrush
6 fieldfare
5 redwing
loads of blackbird
big flock of goldfinch
20+ meadow pipit
1 GBB among the usual gull roost
40+ lapwing
5 snipe
1 jack snipe
7 moorhen
2 kestrel

Flushed 2 jack snipe whilst walking the dogs through the snow on the fields between Mossfield and Foxglove Drive, Whittle.

Winter blackcap

Male Backcap singing in the trees at the bottom of our road in Whittle. Last December we had 4 males visiting our garden regularly so hopefully they will return.

Only birds of note were a jack snipe and a female sparrowhawk. Also a single roe deer.

Mossfield

Barn owl flew from Mossfield to Multipart on Mon at about 8pm, the first I've seen since January. I hear tawnies here most nights. Also, over the weekend a GBB Gull was amongst the usual black headeds and LBBs, a buzzard being mobbed by jackdaws and crows, 12+ redwings, 2 fieldfares, lots of skylark...

Juvenile sparrowhawk sat on my birdtable in the back garden yesterday. It's the third time we've seen it in recent weeks.
Last Sunday the adult female took a starling from a feeder in our front garden.

Loads of young birds including great tits, blue tits, robins, willow warblers, wrens, dunnocks, pied wags, grey wags, moorhens and a family of 5 mistle thrushes. Also lots of adults carrying food including a pair of stonechats, a pair of garden warblers, a female redstart, linnets and spotted flycat...
