Oystercatchers,Buckshaw

Trip to Aldi on Buckshaw - so interesting to see 6 Oystercatchers feeding along on the grass verge by the side of the main road down to Aldi - how things change over 60 years - an Oystercatcher was, then, a rare bird inland - and now!!!

Bittern?

At 10.35 this morning (Sunday 24 March) pretty sure I saw a Bittern, flying south over Hartwood, with a Herring Gull close by for comparison. Had it in sight for about 4 or 5 seconds, without binoculars, at about 50 metres away. Can't be absolutely 100% but reasonably certain - keep your eyes open -...

Re: A brilliant first for Hartwood!! - Cuckoos!

Well we've been here 36 years and this is a first, we have, over the years, had and still get many super birds, Waxwings once, Kingfisher on a shortcut to river Chor, Willow Tits daily, Buzzards very occasionally in our big Oak tree plus a variety of warblers in or just over the garden plus Mallard,...

A brilliant first for Hartwood!! - Cuckoos!

At 4-55pm today I was in the garden when I heard and saw not one but two CUCKOOS! Flying over at around 50 foot, great view, think it was a male chasing female and 'cuckooing' loudly. They disappeared in a southerly direction - towards Aldi! 36 years here but never seen or heard a Cuckoo around Hart...

Painted Lady - invasion?

Been in the gardens all day (Hartwood) and either I've seen the same insect 6 or 7 times over the course of 7 hours or separate insects. Insects flew in - occasionally stopped on the Mock Orange and then headed off in strong flight out of sight. Maybe this blast of hot air from the Africa is pushing...

Lapwing, Buckshaw - Buzzard, Liseux Hall

Lapwing - First roundabout down Buckshaw Avenue - Lapwing on roundabout with 2 chicks - about 4 or 5 days old, don't know if they bred on roundabout but a risky journey to get there otherwise.

Buzzard, seen picking up a young rabbit on path adjacent to Liseux Hall - nature in the raw!

Hartwood Willow Tits

We have at least 2 birds here most days. They seem to disappear in May and return by late October or so. Been like this for two or three years now.
