Ring Necked Parakeet

Very surprised to see one in my garden today, although ony briefly as two crows chased it off. But it is still around the end of Firbank as I can still hear it.

Siskins

A large number of siskins in the trees in my garden today. Two separate flocks with 20-30 in each, coming down to the seed feeder, sometimes 5 at a time

Purple Hairstreaks

At this time of year I can always see plenty of purple hairstreaks buzzing round the tops of my oak trees. Today for some reason a lot more than I've seen before have been coming down to my lawn, onto the clover. Also more butterflies on the buddleia than there's been for several years. The photo is...

Peregrine

I had a good view of a peregrine on Sunday, wheeling above my daughters house in Clayton le Woods - very close to Whittle.

Re: Moth id please

Thanks Ian. I've only ever seen tham flying too and all of the pictures online show it flying. The stripes on this one don't seem to quite fit with the more mottled body of the hummingbird hawk moth so I'm still not sure.

Holly Blue

One female in my garden on Tuesday, not a great shot taken with the phone. Stayed for quite a while feeding on a garden plant that I haven't identified - white flowers, red berries, sharp thorns.

Demise of a duckling

Along the dead end Walton Summit branch of the canal, I'd noticed a mallard pair with 4 ducklings. Suddenly there was a commotion and all I saw was a brown creature retreating into the undergrowth, but now there was only 3 ducklings. Mink maybe.

On a walk up to Rivington Pike on Saturday, via the left path past Spring Cottage. One singing in the valley to the right.

Re: Eagle Owl

Are we sure this is an escapee? A few years ago a pair nested near Dunsop Bridge. I saw them with 3 young when I went up there, but I heard that a farmer shot some or all of them.

Greenfinch

First greenfinch on the feeders this winter, sadly it seemed to be suffering from the parasite, trichomoniasis. Other than that, blue, great and coal tits in abundance, but very few other finches.
