Re: Out West (yet again)

Cheers Len. Tricky on the Wagtail due to the cropping, but the flanks do look nice and clean.

Marshside

4 Water Pipit, including a very fine summer plumaged bird, currently showing well by the concrete trough/wildfowlers pull-in at Marshside. Female Wheatear there as well today. Lots of Avocet and Black-Tailed Godwit on the fresh marsh and a couple of fine Mediterranean Gulls on Polly's Pool. Scaup fr...

Out West (yet again)

Southerly winds and overnight rain brought more expectation and a total of 8 Sand Martin (4 each at the Twin Lakes and Croston Sewage Works) this morning. Singing Blackcap also by the lakes. A cracking male Merlin flew across the mosses nearby. The Green Sandpiper continued to sit by the entrance to...

Out West again

Hoping the showers would work their magic, a single Swallow over the Twin Lakes was the highlight. However, a thorough searching of many muddy puddles and wet fields on the mosses drew a blank on waders, apart from a solitary Redshank on the compound flood on the Finney. The male White Wagtail was s...

Re: Out West am

Possible two birds this morning, that looks more like a female. The first bird I had this morning was a cracking male, completely white below. The light was a bit tricky when John and Gary arrived so could have been this bird because of the slight smudging on the flanks.

Out West am

A small influx of wagtails at Croston Sewage Works produced an early male White Wagtail amongst a dozen Pied and at least 5 Grey Wagtail. Little Egret, 3 Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Reed Bunting, Meadow Pipit, and Linnet as well. Next to Eyes Lane for Paul's Wheatear. 2 female and 1 male on the muck heap...

Re: Common Scoter

After just over an hour of listening 8-9pm:
3 groups of Common Scoter (and 2 further possible groups disrupted by traffic noise)
2 groups each of Wigeon and Teal
1 of probable Gadwall
1 Coot
1 Black-headed Gull
Plus the Mallards and Moorhen distantly from Common Bank Lodge.

Common Scoter

Following reports of birds moving east over Sefton, time well spent in the garden produced my first of the year of the now annual spring overland migration of Common Scoter, with Wigeon and Teal as well. Hopefully more to follow...

Re: Anglezarke Reservoir 23.02.2024

My thoughts are a 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull, but one at the paler end of the spectrum. Bill and structure doesn't look massive enough for GBB, but then always useful to have another gull for comparison.

Re: Lower Rivington Reservoir yesterday

The very dirty, smudgy head suggests argentatus Herring.

Bits and bobs

Walks in the woods this afternoon to keep out of the wind. Finches the order of the day - Siskin and Goldfinch in Astley Park, with noisy pairs of GS Woodpecker and Nuthatch. Large mixed tit flock near the play area including Treecreeper. 28 Goosander on Astley Park Lake. Various finches moving thro...

Re: Redcar Tarn (nr Keighley)

Interesting bird. Different to Pete's as was said on twitter. So much variability in large gulls but you can quickly find an online Caspian that looks like yours. The Queen's Park bird is an interesting individual as that seems more advanced in moult.

Out and about

Yarrow Meadows this morning - very quiet. A couple of Siskin still present, otherwise usual mix of common tits, Goldcrest, Nuthatch, GS Woodpecker, Sparrowhawk and winter thrushes. Two Grey Heron and single Grey Wagtail on and around the river. A very cold Lower Rivington for a short visit as all th...

Yarrow Meadows

Willow Tit back on the meadows for winter hopefully, single bird at the southern end. 20+ Siskin in one flock after several smaller groups (8) and (2) seen elsewhere on the meadows. Singing Dipper on the river, with Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail as well.
