Withnell to White Coppice

Mid day walk gave cuckoo heard in the goit just after the end of the wood (appeared to be flying towards Well Lane area). Mistle Thrush on the cricket field and green Hairstreak in the Clough near the Goit at White Coppice. Tree creeper, and usual small birds around, no Wood Warbler. Lots of Wood So...

Withnell fell

A short walk up there this morning produced several sightings of Small Heath butterflies but still not any Green Hairstreak. Think the cold winter must have wiped out the colony here. Peregrine seen. Cuckoo heard.

Raven, skylarks, cuckoo, sparrowhawk, Meadow pipits, wheatear and curlew seen/heard today on a walk from Withnell to Great Hill but still no Green Hairstreak.

Fairly sure I heard a Wood Warbler call in the trees by the left hand side west bound Goit path as it gets to the road at Watermans cottage

A walk today past Ratten Clough produced Cuckoo and Wheatear but no Ring Ouzel. Brinscall woods (carpeted with bluebells) was disappointing re Wood Warbler. Wheelton plantation

A walk around Ratten Clough produced Wheatear and Cuckoo but no Ring Ouzel. Brinscall woods disappointed re Wood Warbler, looked where the sighting was earlier in the week and in the area where the conifers end, along the main track from the White Coppice end but no joy.

I saw that sighting of swifts on the 19th . Amazing sight. They screamed through my Withnell garden barely above roof height. A friend who knows suggested it was either adults flying before the rain as insects gather then, or juveniles gathering. Whatevet a marvellous sight. Gone back to the regular...

A walk in unexpected sunshine this afternoon. Kingfisher seen along the Goit and 2 male Gooseanders on the Shaleholes.
