Re: Bramblings

Thanks Phil. A friend of mine lives not so far away from you, I will tell her to keep her eyes peeled, meanwhile I will try your nyger trick and see if I can tempt any to Withnell. I love seeing Bramblings but have never seen any locally.

Roe Deer

3 females seen at 11.30 am in the school field at the bottom of Monks Drive Withnell today. It is the 3rd time in as many weeks as I have seen deer in the village, twice in the field.

Bittern

Well it looks as though we may have one of our winter visitors back. Two sightings have been made so far today of a bittern on Meadow Lake. For the past several years (apart from 2015, I think) we have had at least one and usually 2. The first arrives in November and the 2nd late December/early Janu...

Re: Garden Birds

I haven't seen a greenfinch lately but do get goldfinch now when 20 years ago none. Get collar doves daily, jackdaw, coal, blue ad Great Tits, occasional LTT, big increase in number of house sparrows, steady numbers of starlings and increasing numbers of buzzard and raven.

It has been a good year on the reserve for both White Letter Hairstreak and Purple Hairstreak (plus one sighting of a Green Hairstreak) which have been regularly seen until last week and in multiple numbers.

Hares

Hare sighting between Withnell and Abbey Village today. Thought I had a glimpse of one last week (from my house) on the lower fells but wasn't sure. This sighting makes me more certain. Hadnt seen any around the villages for a while so welcome sightings.
