Re: Out West am

I thought that might be the case Ian, I didn't see a 'clean' male White Wag.

Lower Rivington Gull Roost

Counted 220 large gulls - split evenly between Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls; Great Black-backed Gull (2); Mediterranean Gull (20); Common Gull (c.80); and Black-head Gull (3000). It appears that a re...

Re: Lower Rivington Reservoir

4.45 - 6.15 pm: similar to last night's roost it seems, although the brisk northerly sent most of the smaller gulls (including the Meds) to the northern end of the reservoir, which makes viewing more difficult. Almost a year to the day since the juvenile Glaucous Gull was seen on the roost, but stil...

West Pennine Moors

8.00 am - 1.30 pm: LMC-Spitlers Edge-Great Hill-Brinscall-Wite Coppice circular. 10 miles over the moors yet the birding highlight was a Chiffchaff in next door's cherry tree before I set off. As is often the case, sunny and windless is not the best for wildlife (Common Lizards excepted). Distant sk...

Forest of Dean

Sun 18th - spent the day in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, mainly looking for Hawfinch and Goshawk. A single Hawfinch was atop a hornbeam tree in the village of Parkend, later on heard another (with the aid of Cornell Lab's Merlin app) in the RSPB Nagshead woodland nearby. Also present in the ...

Gulls - River Mersey

8.00 - 11.00 am: Arrived at the WSR Recycling plant in Widnes just after first light to see 100's of large girls in the air. Most of them headed to the sandbanks on a receding River Mersey tide a few hundred yards away. The sandbanks that held the most gulls was just to the west of the old Runcorn B...

Lower Rivington Reservoir - Gull roost

3.15 - 5.00 pm: Belated BTO WinGS (Winter Gull Survey) count today after Storm Isha precluded a count on BTO's designated day (Sun 21st Jan). As is frequently the case the roost split (almost 50/50) across the southern and northern ends of the reservoir. BTO counts for the southern end only (as the ...

Re: Lower Rivington gull roost

The gull counts (by Phil) were for Friday (19th). On Saturday (20th) the gulls were spread across the entirety of the Reservoir (with most of the smaller gulls, mainly Black-headed, at the far northern end and the larger gulls spread evenly across south to north), making counts tricky to say the lea...

Mitchell House Reservoirs - Slavonian Grebe

7.45-9.30 am (Sat): Arrived in near darkness at the Mitchell House WTW (near Accrington just off the A56) hoping to see a Slavonian Grebe that was first seen on Thurs 18th. While it showed briefly in the murk initially, it then disappeared for the best part of an hour as the wind and rain howled bef...
